Quiet Power Labs is about the boring half of off-grid living — the power, water, waste and insulation decisions that quietly decide whether a build works or becomes a money pit. Most off-grid content skips this part. It shows you a finished container home with a wood stove and good lighting, and leaves out the fact that the owner sized their battery bank wrong twice, discovered their county does not permit composting toilets, and had to open a wall to split a greywater line they should have separated at rough-in. That gap is what this site exists to close. Who’s behind this

Quiet Power Labs is written from the high desert of New Mexico by a U.S. Marine Corps veteran who came to off-grid planning the way most people do — by needing it to actually work, on a budget, without a contractor on speed dial.

New Mexico is a useful place to write this from. Albuquerque averages roughly 6.4 peak sun hours a day on a fixed-tilt array, against about 4.5 across most of the country. That means the solar math here gets worked out somewhere the sun genuinely cooperates — and it means every figure on this site comes with the same warning: run your own location through NREL’s PVWatts before you buy a single panel. An array sized for New Mexico will leave you short in Ohio, and short in December anywhere.

Everything published here is written to be used on a job site, not admired. Where a number appears, it came from a manufacturer spec, a real quote, or a published cost survey — and it carries a date on it, because 2026 prices are not 2022 prices.
